Supporting Family Connection Across Distance

For some individuals at our facilities, staying connected to family is shaped not by desire but by distance. When relatives live out of state or are unable to travel, maintaining that relationship can become increasingly difficult over time.

At MARS, supporting family connection sometimes means navigating the practical realities of travel. When an individual expressed a desire to visit a family member who could not travel to California, staff coordinated the visit by aligning with partners, securing required approvals, and planning carefully so the experience felt safe, familiar, and supported.

Travel was approached thoughtfully. Familiar staff provided continuity, expectations were clearly communicated, and the focus remained on ensuring the individual felt comfortable throughout the process. What began as a complex request became something that could be revisited and planned for again, rather than treated as a one-time exception.

Today, travel is part of an ongoing effort to maintain family relationships. Visits are approached with the same consistency and preparation as other aspects of care, allowing connection to continue even when geography makes it challenging.
